Modern Life

Ive been in the UK since July 17th.

The first couple of weeks were a bit surreal to be honest, climbing in the Lakes, North Wales, and then back in the Lakes again. By surreal I mean, one minuet home in Kalymnos (and remember how small it is), to driving all over the country, hunting for the weather to climb, sleeping in different beds, getting used to driving again, my sisters little car, climbing with Di again... I was definatley a little out of sorts.

Now, up in Aberdeenshire again, its peaceful, and homely at my sisters place, all alone while they enjoy the Spanish heatwave.

I have time now to watch the news on tv, go shopping in the city, and ‘people watch’.
And oh what a sight to behold....

People. Obsessed with possessions, with looks, with cars, with celebrity, with money and let me repeat, obsessed with how they look.

Its all fake.
Fake tans
Fake hair
Fake eye lashes
Fake eye brows
Fake emotions
Fake sympathy
Fake talking....

When and how did this a happen? Why are people so wrapped up in being the same as everybody else, following trends and fashions, getting tattoo’s, looking brown (orange), buying the right cars, living in the right places... wearing the right brands...

Its all complete and utter bollocks!!

We now have a society of extremes.
You’re either a sheep, following your favourite celebrity or footballer, covered in fake tan and tattoos, questing ever onward for that nice semi in suburbia, and those 2 lovely cars that look the same as everybody else’s, or you’re likely to be a vegan eco warrior recycling your bog roll and carrying your hessian shopping bag around, buying assorted green things from your nearest Waitrose..

Everyone is so ‘on trend’ these days. I even noticed when I was still at work for the ‘new improved’ business that is NATS.... All trendy business speak, waffle and bullshit, wrapped up nicely in a cool shirt and well cut slacks, attending pointless meetings where little or nothing is ever decided except for the date of the next meeting, networking, watching the bottom line, cutting the costs, making pretty graphs and spreadsheets, showing people the door and relying on technology. NATS will one day be a million managers managing new computer systems with nobody alive that remembers how to do the job if the WiFi goes down. Its a shame. Yes it was a bit fat in the old days for sure, but when the people, the salary and the pensions are the only thing you can lose to make your safety critical ‘business’ viable then you’ve lost your sole to the devil and its money first, second and last.

The world is indeed going mad.
Everyone has to be seen to be ‘right on’, and politically correct, just in case we should possibly upset anyone. Everything is sanitised and safe, everyone is watched, for their own safety of course.. Its all too much!!

We get our news from the right wing BBC, super PC, we get our diets from the latest TV chef or Jamie, we get tattoo ideas and the latest crazy haircuts from over paid footballers and we see it all instantly via social media on our latest fancy phones, and all the while the government of the day is busy screwing us over, lining their own pockets and all we can do is moan about it on Facebook and think thats enough!?!

Tell me, how often have you been out and watched the people around you all staring down into their phones rather than having a chat about their day (or are you too busy on YOUR phone too?)?

Honestly, this is all madness. On my little Aegean island, where time has stood still and it resides firmly in the pre PC days of the 60’s or 70’s, its all so plainly obvious.

It’s all nuts!
Life is short, life is for living, for experiences, and memories, not for cars, houses, looks and fake impressions... Do something different, challenge your norms, get out of your comfort zone, put your phone down and try something different...

I could of course, be completely wrong! But I doubt it.
