Springtime.

It’s been a beautiful day. Again.

I spent it at Odyssey sector. It was pleasantly busy there today, not crazy like it often is this time of year... Ron Fawcett was there, Basher Atkinson, Rory, Paul, The American Climbing collage guys were there too. Conditions were awful, high humidity last night had left the rock greasy and dark.

Today is April the 24th. I’ve seen folks in the sea swimming, looks like the winters warm southerly winds have kept the sea temperature reasonable. On this day last year I went for a 30 second swim and came out numb!

I went to work for a couple of hours after climbing. It’s been very quiet on the shoe front, in fact I think in general, numbers are down, you can see it in the restaurants in the evenings, and on the crags during the day.

Currently I’m available by direct contact only, or via those bars and shops that know me and let me know if people have been looking for a resole.

It’s fair to say I miss having a shop front and I’m certain I would have had more work had I still had all the signage and a presence at the store like I have over the past couple of years. Having said that, I have actively avoided getting busy so I can train and get fit again, which is working nicely at the moment, although a slightly tweaks finger needs watching and care.

I actually like the way things are going, shoe wise... as long as I don’t get rusty I can carry on like this for a while. Fitness wise, the recovery from surgery is going fine, in general the cycling is helping a lot, diet is better as is usual in the sunny months, and climbing is getting there.... Still not as confident as I can be, but it will come.

Just don’t get injured!!!

Dear diary....

My heart's not in it right now... not in anything. I realise I'm a little 'down'. It's not a good time at the moment. Thankfully the sun is shining and there is real warmth to cheer me up. I'm going to have a moan, putting it in black and white is cathartic, so here goes. Work. It's lacking methods and processes. The ones I had in my old workshop were great and worked well, now there's no rhythm, no flow. Its a fine little workshop and once things settle I'm sure I'll get organised again. The grinder motor is on it's last legs and sounds like a bag of spanners in a washing machine! It was crazy noisy, I thought it was going to explode this morning. There's a new motor on the way. I've made a couple of enquires into a new 'shop window' for the resole, and I have had two really kind offers from friends with bars.... Steve Todd

Steve passed away a few days ago. A sudden heart attack while asleep in his bed overnight. He was my age. Scary shit right~! Pam and I had dinner with him and Tracy just a few days ago in Fountagio by Melitsahas harbour. It was the first time Steve and I had really had a good chat about anything other than those bloody cats! I’m sure Tracy’s presence had helped spread the conversation away from just cats, as was usual when Pam and Steve were together with me. It was a really enjoyable evening over some great fish soup!  Pam and Steve had a shared love for the cats in the colony at his flat, some of which were hers, and of course Annie and Batman, Beamer, and Bony M from the old gang at Pams place.  Steve and I were not friends as such. We knew each other through Pam only, otherwise I wouldn’t have known him at all I imagine. But over the years we met and chatted, usually with Pam and I got to see the work he did for the islands cats, with some real zeal and passion too.  ...

No Mans Land.

Spending a while with someone that has known me a long time has its advantages. The last few days have been spent with Di Gilbert. We’ve known each other for many years and its been good to spend some time together again. We said goodbye this morning with a hug and that famous ‘Giblet’ smile :) I know that I’m a little out of sorts, have been for a while I suppose, but it gets forced home when someone you know, or more to the point, knows you, tells you that you're not right, you’ve lost your mojo, you’re in a strange place......No mans land. Acknowledging the fact that something is wrong is half the battle, and I do accept that. Finding out what it is that’s causing my loss of ‘sparkle’ is a different thing. At least its good to have friends that feel comfortable enough to tell you!  Di has never been one to hold back!!
