Steve Todd
Steve passed away a few days ago. A sudden heart attack while asleep in his bed overnight. He was my age. Scary shit right~!
Pam and I had dinner with him and Tracy just a few days ago in Fountagio by Melitsahas harbour. It was the first time Steve and I had really had a good chat about anything other than those bloody cats! I’m sure Tracy’s presence had helped spread the conversation away from just cats, as was usual when Pam and Steve were together with me. It was a really enjoyable evening over some great fish soup!
Pam and Steve had a shared love for the cats in the colony at his flat, some of which were hers, and of course Annie and Batman, Beamer, and Bony M from the old gang at Pams place.
Steve and I were not friends as such. We knew each other through Pam only, otherwise I wouldn’t have known him at all I imagine. But over the years we met and chatted, usually with Pam and I got to see the work he did for the islands cats, with some real zeal and passion too.
Other mutual friends we knew on the island told me about the old Steve, the boozing, the reformation and finding God. I’d never seen him drinking but the way he lived with all those cats did nothing for me personally, it was just too chaotic with the cats running around everywhere, and I had limited patience for prolonged conversations about this cat, or that cat, or this vet, or that charity group….. At least he usually had a smile and was always nice and pleasant.
Its a shame that he’s gone. He was way too young and on a good life path with goals and purpose! Years of alcohol abuse have come home to roost perhaps?
I’m genuinely sad though, because Pam is sad, she’s really upset for him and the cats. Sad for all Pams cats and all the other regulars there I’ve got to know while I’m on feeding duty when Pams away at work. I’ll be there today to make sure they’re all ok. I’m also feeling it because of his age. The growing feeling of mortality as I age is really in my mind for some reason, coupled with uncertainty over why he died and wether it had anything at all to do with vaccines or covid? I would really like to know the cause of death and I hope we get to learn
Also sad for the possible ramifications of his death, both for the cat colony, and for Pam and her future direction.
Watch this space!
